The white-breasted waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) young chick having a drink.
These are dark birds with a clean white face, breast and belly, but they can appear very colourful. I had the pleasure of watching them over a few months as their chicks grew, and tomorrow I will post some pictures of the younger chicks, so do check back.
They are often seen stepping slowly with their large feet and their tail cocked upright in open marshes.
