The spotted black Cicada are the first cicadas to emerge in spring, and you should be hearing them, if not finding them, around now.
They only live for a couple of months and when they die they can be found like this one below clinging onto its perch, with mould growing around its body.
Look for them in large numbers on plant stems or on the trunks of trees.
