The little owl

After all my Hong Kong owls, I thought I would try and find some in the UK; so off I went to sit in a hide for 6 hours with my son, and we were rewarded with some fantastic viewings. (These are completely wild owls). I had my 800mm lens with me, so was able to get some crisp shots.

The Scientific name is Athene noctua, and there is a resident introduced population of around 5,700 breeding pairs.

They have a wingspan of around 54 – 60 cm.

As you can see, they are are small, plump birds, with lots of character, and They vary in colour as you can see, with the female being slightly larger.

Little owls feed mainly on small mammals and birds as well as amphibians, reptiles and large insects.
