Dunnock - a bird in our UK gardens

Dunnock - Prunella modularis. This shy bird can be seen hopping about under hedges - very appropriate as its other name is 'hedge sparrow'. you can see them in gardens, woodlands, hedgerows and parks.

Just 14cm long with a Wingspan of 20cm weighing only 21g with an average lifespan: 2 years

Here is a juvenile in my Sister's garden.



Dunnocks are shy birds, hopping about in low vegetation and around the edge of lawns, feeding on small insects, worms and seeds. The dunnock is a streaky brown-and-grey bird, with a dark grey head and a thin bill.
